Checkmate in Vienna is a gripping drama that explores the psychological torture of isolation and our capacity for survival. Set during the Nazi annexation of Austria, the game tells the story of Dr. Josef Bartok, a wealthy notary to the aristocrats in Vienna, who is imprisoned in the luxurious Hotel Metropole by the Nazis. Trapped in solitary confinement and subjected to months of brutal interrogations, Bartok turns to the game of chess to save himself from madness and destruction. The game becomes his only means of survival as he battles against his captors and his own psyche in a desperate fight for his life.
